Maya de Souza
ex-Head of Resource Efficiency & Waste Prevention Policy

Maya is an environmental policy expert, with a specialist interest in resources and waste policy, having worked at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in various policy areas for over 10 years, including over three years leading Defra’s Resource Efficiency & Waste Prevention Policy team. In her Resource Efficiency role, Maya led on developing a new cross-sectoral policy programme focusing on preventing waste, increasing the efficiency of resource use and building resource efficiency into the Net Zero strategy. She spearheaded textiles and ecodesign/labelling policy.

Maya has also worked with business in the UK and Asia, leading collaborative projects and initiatives to address challenges and collectively raise the bar on environmental performance, as well as to influence public policy. Until mid-2023, she was Business in the Community’s (the Prince’s Responsible Business Network) Circular Economy Director, leading the work with member companies on collaborative projects, capacity building, and shaping public policy.
